Water Well Projects: Building Hopes & Dreams for the People in Gaza

The Gaza Strip, commonly known as Gaza, is a Palestinian exclave facing the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea.  It borders Egypt on the southwest side, and Israel on the east and north sides.  More than 2 million people live in this enclave roughly half the size of Singapore.

Due to decades of blockade, land, air and sea, the people of Gaza are suffering as there is limited supply to even basic necessities like electricity, food and other necessities.  Even British Prime Minister David Cameron called it “an open-air prison” .  Gaza faces an acute water crisis and is severely lacking in clean water .  Less than 4% of fresh water in Gaza is drinkable and the surrounding sea is polluted by sewage, due to a lack of equipment for good sanitation and clean water  due to the blockade.  Many organisations consider Gaza’s water condition to be in a state of emergency .

Among the largest project SimplyIslam is working with the Sawaed Centre is the Deep Water Well Project.  SimplyIslam, with the support of private donors, from 2021 to 2022 facilitated for the Sawaed Centre to install nine (9) deep water wells that are fully functioning till today.

Each water well is located within the refugee sites in Gaza and cost about US$8,000 to build and install – each well serves at least 5,000 to 8,000 families.  After completion, each well was tested for its quality and drinkability standards before it was commissioned for public use.  The installation and location of each well is well documented.  SimplyIslam believes that it is an important project that will have a long and positive impact on the people and is committed to continue its efforts to help build deep water wells (or other similar projects) in Gaza to improve the water and sanitation conditions and alleviate their water crisis.
